ISO 20022 Wire Transfer Migration

Important changes are on the horizon for wire transfers. Here’s some information to get you started on what they are, what they mean, and when they will happen.

Beginning July 14, 2025, all wire transfers will be required to follow a new industry-wide messaging standard called ISO 20022. This change is required by the Federal Reserve and is not specific to CSB.

ISO 20022 is designed to make wire payments more secure, efficient, and accurate. It allows for richer data, better fraud prevention, and fewer errors in processing.

We’re here to help you prepare. Below, you’ll find key details, FAQs, and what this means for you.

What is ISO 20022?

ISO 20022 is a global standard for financial messaging, used by institutions around the world to streamline payment processing. It will replace the Federal Reserve’s current FAIM wire format with a more structured system that improves how banks communicate and process wire instructions.

This new format allows for enhanced data quality and consistency, making payments easier to track, harder to misroute, and more secure overall.

What does this mean for you?

All wires sent through the Federal Reserve will need to be in compliance with the ISO 20022 standards before July 14th, 2025.
Updated Format and Field Names

Wire instructions will need to follow the new ISO 20022 format. This includes changes to field labels and naming conventions, especially in address fields.
Changes to International Address Fields

The first time you send a wire after July 14th, please pay careful attention to the address fields on your international wires.

No Impact to ACH Transfers

These changes only apply to wire transfers. ACH transfers are not affected.

Updated wire Terminology

The process stays the same, but field names and formatting may look a little different. Below is a comparison of the current wire terminology and how it will appear in the new ISO 20022 format.

Your wire transfers will continue to process as usual, but some fields and terminology will change. The biggest improvement is enhanced tracking and structured data to help payments move more smoothly.

We will continue to send wire notifications as you receive them today. However, CSB will update the format, field names, and terminology to align with ISO 20022 standards.

We do not anticipate delays.
Please plan to review the addresses for your International Wire Creditors (Beneficiaries) on Day 1. Updates to Creditor information cannot be made before July 14, so it’s important to complete your review once the new format is in place.
